President William Ruto has said the true measure of constitutional implementation is how its promises are reflected in the daily lives of Kenyans.
Speaking during the Katiba@16 celebrations at KICC, Nairobi, Ruto said the impact of the Constitution should be seen in the lives of citizens.
He highlighted healthcare, affordable housing, education, agriculture and social protection as areas where his administration has made progress, describing them as key efforts to turn constitutional rights into benefits for Kenyans.
Ruto said these efforts are part of the implementation of constitutional promises and should be considered when assessing the impact of the Constitution on citizens.
The President’s remarks came as Kenya marked 16 years since the promulgation of the 2010 Constitution.
Katiba Day commemorates the promulgation of the Constitution and provides an opportunity for Kenyans to reflect on its implementation, governance and the rights and responsibilities set out in the document.
President Ruto proclaimed August 27 as Katiba Day in 2025, with the day observed annually from then onwards.
This year’s celebrations therefore mark the 16th anniversary of the Constitution and are being held across Kenya as well as in Kenyan diplomatic missions abroad.
The annual event is intended to promote constitutional awareness, civic engagement and reflection on governance.
The Constitution is recognised as a transformative milestone and an expression of the sovereign will of the Kenyan people.
Katiba Day also reinforces the country’s commitment to constitutionalism, the rule of law and citizen-centred governance.
The celebrations provide an opportunity for citizens and institutions to reflect on the extent to which the Constitution’s provisions have been implemented and how its principles are reflected in governance and public life.
Ruto has used this year’s occasion to focus on the connection between constitutional implementation and the everyday experiences of Kenyans.
He said progress in areas such as healthcare, affordable housing, education, agriculture and social protection should be viewed in the context of efforts to translate constitutional rights into benefits for citizens.
The focus on citizens’ daily lives places the practical impact of constitutional implementation at the centre of the Katiba@16 celebrations.
Katiba Day is observed annually on August 27.
However, it is a working day and is not a public holiday.
