The Nairobi City County Assembly has approved the nomination of Dr Machel Waikenda as the next County Secretary, paving the way for his appointment by Governor Johnson Sakaja.
The approval followed a motion moved by Majority Leader Peter Imwatok, who backed Waikenda’s nomination and described him as competent, knowledgeable, and well-suited for the position.
Imwatok, who is also a member of the selection committee, said the panel was satisfied with Waikenda’s qualifications and suitability for the job.
“Mr Speaker, as a member of the Selection Committee, I want to assure this House that the nominee, Dr. Machel Waikenda, is competent and highly suitable for the job. We have had several people acting in that office, and it was high time the position was substantively filled. I can assure the House that he meets the merit requirements,” said Imwatok.

Ngei Ward MCA Redson Otieno also endorsed Waikenda, citing his record as Chief Officer for Mobility and Works.
Otieno described him as diligent, responsive and committed to service delivery, saying he had consistently been available to address concerns raised by residents and leaders.
“Dr Waikenda has been very helpful. He is always available to take calls and assist in resolving issues affecting residents and leaders alike,” Otieno said.
The Assembly’s approval clears the way for Sakaja to formally appoint Waikenda to the position.
If appointed, Waikenda will serve a five-year term as the county’s top administrative official.
