Well-known Kenyan comedian and content creator Alex Mathenge has announced his complete departure from social media. On Monday, 24 August 2026, the actor revealed he is selling all his verified digital pages for at least KSh 500,000.

In a series of highly personal Instagram stories, Mathenge laid bare his recent battles with depression, grief, and the relationships that he claims led to his financial and personal ruin.

The Rise of a Digital Star

Before his sudden exit, the comedian, whose real name is Alex Macharia Wanjugu, built a massive online brand. He graduated from Kenyatta University in 2009 with a Bachelor of Education. After training in university theatre, Mathenge became a household name in Kenya by playing a satirical, heavy-set police officer.

His police-themed comedy videos attracted hundreds of thousands of organic followers. But behind the laughter, a severe personal crisis was brewing.

A 'Demonic' Industry and Downfall

According to Mathenge, his struggles began three years ago when he was forced to step away from content creation.

"Now, 3 years ago, factors beyond my control forced me to take a break from creating content."

The creator described the entertainment sector as a "demonic industry". After shutting down his operations, he suffered a chain of devastating personal and financial losses.

"I lost everything! I lost all the people I used to work with, lost all my gigs, lost my house, lost my family and got depressed!" Mathenge wrote.

The immense stress took a heavy physical toll. The comedian saw his body weight drop drastically from 105 kilograms to 77 kilograms. He noted that "everyone who saw me said I was dying."

Loss, Therapy, and Sobriety

The crisis deepened further in 2024 when the comedian lost his father. He described his father as the only person who genuinely supported me in my lowest moments.

Faced with severe grief, Mathenge checked himself into therapy. He urged other men not to shy away from seeking professional support. The treatment helped him regain his emotional and financial footing.

Alongside therapy, Mathenge has maintained a strict path to recovery.

"I am very sober! This is the second year of being sober!"

He assured his followers that he is in a healthy state of mind. "I am making this decision while at my best mental capacity!" he added.

Putting Pages Up for Sale

Despite recovering his health, Mathenge has decided to leave his online career behind permanently. He is selling his verified Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube pages. He stated that he will not accept any offer below KSh 500,000.

His digital empire holds significant reach across platforms. On YouTube, the actor boasts 251,000 subscribers. His Instagram account has amassed 105,000 followers. On TikTok, his verified account has 481,500 followers, though his profile display lists 418,100 followers and 2.1 million likes.

The comedian was explicit about his primary reason for quitting.

"I am quitting social media because of WOMEN!"

Mathenge concluded by stating that female relationships were his ultimate undoing. "Women brought me down; I don’t want social media anymore!" he declared.

The former star now hopes to live a quiet life. "I just want to be in a normal job like anyone else, behind a desk and be happy in the evening," he wrote.
