Action between KCB and Kisumu RFC at the Driftwood Sevens/HANDOUT
Kabras Sugar, KCB, Menengai Oilers and NYS Spades emerged as the leading sides after an action-packed opening day of the Driftwood Sevens in Mombasa on Saturday.
Kabras topped Pool A of the fourth leg of the SportPesa National Circuit unbeaten on eight points after two wins and a draw. They opened with a 43-0 demolition of Mombasa RFC, beat Nondescripts 12-0 and were held 17-17 by Kenya Harlequin.
Nondescripts finished second on seven points after beating Harlequin 17-5 and Mombasa 22-10. Mombasa were third on five points after edging Harlequin 22-19, leaving Quins bottom on four.
KCB produced the best record of the day, sweeping Pool B with three wins to collect nine points.
They beat Kisumu RFC 22-5, Uganda Sevens 12-7 and KU Blak Blad 29-10. Uganda Sevens finished second on seven points after recovering from their loss to KCB with wins over Blak Blad and Kisumu.
Kisumu and Blak Blad both collected four points, with Kisumu taking third place on points difference.
Menengai Oilers were equally dominant in Pool C, winning all three matches to finish on nine points.
They beat Nakuru RFC 14-7, thrashed Kilifi RFC 34-5 and completed their unbeaten run with a 31-5 victory over Daystar Falcons. Oilers scored 79 points and conceded only 17.
Daystar finished second on seven points after wins over Kilifi and Nakuru. Kilifi and Nakuru both collected four points after their 19-19 draw, with Kilifi taking third place on points scored.
Pool D was the closest, with NYS Spades finishing unbeaten on eight points.
Spades drew 5-5 with Mwamba RFC before beating Strathmore Leos 15-12 and MMUST RFC 7-5.
Mwamba finished second on six points after beating MMUST 17-12. Strathmore edged MMUST for third on points difference after both sides finished on five points.
The results set up an intriguing knockout phase, with the leading teams now targeting a strong finish in Mombasa.
