Three people have died after the vehicles they were travelling in were involved in a road crash along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway in the early hours of Friday.
Athi River East Deputy Sub-County Police Commander Christine Masaro said the three died at the scene while 14 others sustained serious injuries.
The crash occurred at about 1:40 am near a club in Syokimau, Machakos County. All three who died were men.
Masaro said the crash involved a 16-seater passenger service matatu and a private car. Both vehicles were travelling from Nairobi towards Mombasa when the crash happened.
"The matter was reported to SNP Police Station as a fatal road traffic accident incident," Masaro said.
Police responded to the scene, processed and documented it before the road was cleared.
The damaged vehicles were towed to SNP Police Station pending inspection and further action.
Masaro said the matatu driver was among the 14 injured and was rushed to a hospital in Mlolongo Township.
The bodies of the deceased men were moved to Shalom Community Hospital in Athi River.
The police boss said the cause of the crash had not been immediately established.
Investigations have been launched.
Masaro cautioned motorists against speeding and urged them to adhere to traffic rules and regulations.
The incident comes seven days after another fatal crash was reported in neighbouring Makueni County.
Police reported that seven people died in the accident that happened at Inyoni Village of Ikangavya Sub-Location, Kalamba Sub-Ward in Makueni County.
Police said the minibus lost control while travelling through the hilly Kalembwani terrain before rolling several times down the steep hillside.
Police said the victims were travelling from Nthongoni in Kibwezi East Constituency to Ikangavya to attend a dowry payment ceremony and related celebrations.
The vehicle was reportedly carrying about 50 passengers at the time of the accident.
Seven people died at the scene, while several others sustained injuries.
