Upper Hill School moved a step closer to reclaiming the Federation of East Africa Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) rugby 15s title after maintaining their perfect run with a fifth consecutive victory in Morogoro, Tanzania.
The national champions underlined their credentials as title favourites on Wednesday, beating Uganda champions Jinja Secondary 17-6 in a fiercely contested match at Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA).
Coached by Eustace Sifuna, Upper Hill can be crowned champions on Friday if they overcome compatriots St Mary’s, Yala in their final match. The competition is being played on a round-robin basis.
Yala kept their title hopes alive after an impressive 38-15 victory over Uganda’s St Mary’s Kisubi, while Kisii School boosted their chances of a podium finish with a resounding 60-0 demolition of Tanzania’s Elerai.
In volleyball, Kenyan champions Kesogon Mixed Senior marched into the semi-finals after topping Pool A with a perfect record of four wins. The 2024 FEASSA champions completed their group-stage campaign in style, sweeping Rwanda’s GS Indangaburezi 3-0 (25-8, 25-15, 25-11) at Morogoro Teachers College.
Kesogon will face Uganda’s Bukedea Comprehensive School in Friday’s semi-final. GS Indangaburezi finished second in Pool A and will meet Kenya’s St Martha’s Mwitoti Girls in the other semi-final.
Mwitoti, who finished third at the Kenyan national championships, also ended their group campaign on a high, beating Uganda’s Katikamu SDA Secondary School 25-19, 25-12, 25-13. In the boys’ competition, AIC Chepsaita are the only Kenyan side to reach the semi-finals after national champions Chesamisi and Matiliku Boys were eliminated in the group stage.
Chepsaita finished second in Pool B with four wins from five matches and will face Bukedea Comprehensive School, while Uganda’s Namugongo Vocational School take on Rwanda’s Nyanza Technical School in the other semi-final. In basketball, Kenyan champions Friends School Kamusinga and Butere Girls secured semi-final berths.
Kamusinga finished second in Pool B with five points, one behind leaders Amus College of Uganda. They will face either defending champions International Technical School Kigali of Rwanda or Uganda’s St Cyprian High School in the semi-finals.
Butere also finished second in Pool B with five points after victories over Uganda’s St Noah Girls and Tanzania’s Rungwa Secondary School. They will face Ugandan powerhouse St Mary’s Kitende, while Tanzania’s Orkeeswa take on Uganda’s Nabisunsa on Friday.
