The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has summoned former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to appear before it over alleged remarks made at several public events across the country.
According to a letter dated August 18, 2026, the commission is investigating utterances it alleges Gachagua made at various public forums under Sections 27, 29 and 63C as read with Section 63E of the National Cohesion and Integration Act.
The summons requires Gachagua to appear before the commission at its offices at Britam Towers, Upper Hill, Nairobi, on Thursday, August 27, at 2 pm to assist with the ongoing investigations.
The document warns that failure to appear in person could result in warrants of arrest being issued for his arrest and production before the commission, as well as possible criminal and/or contempt proceedings.
The NCIC cites several alleged incidents in the summons, including remarks Gachagua is alleged to have made in Meru concerning political leaders and the leadership of the Mount Kenya region.
The commission also refers to alleged remarks made during a public rally in Luanda, Vihiga County, on June 12, 2026.
Another allegation concerns remarks Gachagua is alleged to have made at Gusii Stadium in Kisii County on February 23, 2026.
The commission further cites alleged remarks made during a tour of Meru between July 25 and July 28, 2026.
According to the summons, Gachagua addressed his use of figurative language while referring to remarks about “killing” a snake and its eggs.
The NCIC says its investigations relate to utterances allegedly made at different public forums and fall within its mandate to guard against negative ethnicity, racism, religious intolerance and hate speech.
Gachagua has been directed to appear before the NCIC on August 27 to assist with the investigations.
