The notice that has been declared fake/ HANDOUTThe Kenya Revenue Authority has warned members of the public against a fake notice graphic circulating online claiming that taxpayers who fail to remit the housing levy will have their KRA PINs and bank accounts frozen.
KRA said the graphic, which bears the authority’s branding and the iTax logo, is not an official communication from the tax agency.
The authority urged members of the public to disregard the information and rely on its official communication channels for updates on taxes and other statutory obligations.
“Beware of fake news circulating online. KRA has not issued the information contained in this graphic,” the authority said.
KRA said taxpayers should verify tax-related information before acting on notices or messages circulating on social media and other online platforms.
The warning comes as tax-related information continues to circulate online, with getting mixed reaction from the public.
KRA advised the public to confirm information through its official communication channels whenever there is uncertainty over tax obligations or enforcement measures.
The Housing Levy is a mandatory contribution introduced by the government to finance the development of affordable housing and related infrastructure in Kenya. Employees contribute 1.5 per cent of their gross monthly salary, while employers make a matching 1.5 per cent contribution.
The funds are intended to support the government’s affordable housing programme, including the construction of housing units for eligible Kenyans.
