Oscar-winning actor Sir Anthony Hopkins is preparing to take on a new role in his remarkable career: recording artist and classical composer.
At the age of 88, the legendary Welsh actor is set to release his debut album, Life Is a Dream, marking a major milestone for a man whose passion for music has stretched across more than six decades.
The album, which will be released by Decca Classics on August 21, 2026, features 12 orchestral compositions written by Hopkins throughout his lifetime.
The project brings together some of the actor's longstanding musical work and gives audiences an opportunity to experience a different side of the man best known for his performances in films such as The Silence of the Lambs and The Father.
Hopkins' connection to music began long before his Hollywood success.
He started playing the piano at the age of four and composed his first piece in 1960.
Although acting ultimately became his profession, music remained an important part of his life.
He has also composed music for some of the films he directed, demonstrating that his creative interests have always extended beyond acting.
Life Is a Dream is particularly personal because its compositions were created over a period spanning roughly six decades.
The collection reflects Hopkins' memories, emotions and experiences, including influences from his childhood in Wales.
One of the featured pieces, “Bracken Road,” draws inspiration from his childhood memories of Margam in South Wales.
The composition has already been released as a single ahead of the full album.
The album was recorded in London with the Philharmonia Orchestra and conducted by renowned Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel.
Their collaboration gives Hopkins' compositions a large-scale orchestral setting and represents a significant moment in his transition from celebrated actor to officially released composer.
Despite his experience and international fame, Hopkins has admitted to experiencing self-doubt while working on the project.
He has described questioning whether he had actually written some of the music himself, an experience he associated with impostor syndrome.
Nevertheless, he continued working on the compositions and eventually brought the project to completion.
For Hopkins, the album represents more than a career experiment. He has repeatedly described music as his first love and has said that composing gives him a sense of freedom.
The project therefore allows him to share a deeply personal artistic passion that has existed alongside his acting career for most of his life.
The album will initially be available on CD and digital platforms, with a two-LP vinyl edition scheduled to follow on October 30
