Kesogon bagged their third girls’ national volleyball title after beating regular campaigners Soweto Academy 3-0 (25-13, 25-10, 25-18) at MPESA Foundation Academy in Thika on Thursday. Kesogon previously won the titles in 2023 and 2026.
Coach John Marani said: “It was a good game. The girls played as per our instructions. Soweto are a good team, but we were tactically better and exploited their weaknesses.”
He added that they have now set their sights on the Federation of East Africa Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) Games.
In the semifinals, Kesogon ended Kwanthanze Girls’ dominance by eliminating the seven-time champions 3-0 (25-21, 25-11, 25-19) while Soweto beat Mwitoti 3-1 (17-15, 25-16, 25-20, 25-21). St Martha’s Mwitoti Girls won the bronze after beating giants Kwanthanze 3-1 in the play-off.
In the entertaining boys’ volleyball final, Chesamis beat AIC Chepsaita 3-1 (25-23, 14-25, 23-23, 25-18) to be crowned champions.
Both teams progressed to the FEASSA games set for August 12 to 23 in Morogoro, Tanzania.
In the semis, Chepsaita defeated Matiliku 3-0 (25-22, 25-11, 25-19) while Chesamis, backed by MP Dan Wanyama, beat Masara Mixed 3-0 (25-11, 25-22, 25-11).
Andersen Mixed Senior School outclassed St Monica Bukokholo 49-37 to claim their first national netball title. Asersen, the champions of Rift Valley, led 28-20 at the break. Former national and East Africa champions Kaya Tiwi settled for the third position after a comfortable 57-17 win over Kinale Girls.
Andersen coach Charles Omega attributed the win to hard work and dedication. “It has been a tough championship because we qualified as team number two from the group stage,” said Omega.
He said goal defender Mary Chemtail, goal scorer Leah Chepkoech and diminutive centre Pauline Chelimo were instrumental in the team’s win. Bukokholo coach Mary Walubengo conceded defeat, saying it was not their day.
“It was a very competitive championship, and as a coach who was also a player, I accept the result. Our key player Naomi Wanyonyi suffered an injury,” said Walubengo.
Kosirai Girls and Cheptil Boys won the inaugural beach volleyball titles during the championship played at Mang’u High School.
In the boys’ category, Cheptil overcame Sang’alo 2-0 (25-23, 21-18) in the final, while Kosirai beat Bishop Sulumeti Girls 2-0 (25-23, 21-14).
