A medical doctor who was allegedly abducted by armed men and held while a Sh3 million ransom was demanded for his release has been rescued by police in Athi River.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), officers from Athi River Police Station, working with members of the public, rescued the doctor after tracing the vehicle in which he was reportedly being held.

The DCI said the doctor was allegedly confronted while in the company of friends at a mall by three men. The suspects reportedly handcuffed him before forcing him into a Subaru Forester.

Preliminary investigations indicate the vehicle's side mirrors displayed a different registration identity from the vehicle itself. Investigators believe this may have been intended to conceal the vehicle's identity during the alleged crime.

Police said the suspects allegedly drove the victim through several locations while demanding a Sh3 million ransom. The victim was also reportedly tortured before the vehicle headed towards Athi River.

The DCI said officers acted on intelligence received and, with the assistance of members of the public, tracked the vehicle to the Mavemba–Mugoya Road in Athi River.

According to investigators, the operation led to a confrontation during which two suspects reportedly escaped.

The third suspect was allegedly cornered by members of the public and subjected to mob injustice before police intervened.

Officers rescued the suspect and rushed him to hospital, where he remains under police guard as investigations continue.

The doctor was rescued safely during the operation, the DCI said.

Police also recovered a pair of handcuffs believed to have been used during the alleged abduction. The Subaru Forester was detained as an exhibit to support ongoing investigations.

Meanwhile, detectives have launched a manhunt for the two suspects who remain at large.

The DCI said investigations into the incident are ongoing as officers pursue additional leads. Authorities have not disclosed further details about the suspects or the circumstances surrounding the alleged abduction as inquiries continue.
