Mumias East MP Peter Salasya has once again set social media abuzz after unveiling ambitious plans for this year’s PK Salasya Classic Cup. This grassroots football tournament continues to grow in popularity across Western Kenya.

In a bold statement shared on his X account, Salasya revealed that he is targeting a crowd of 20,000 spectators at the Shianda KMTC grounds and is seeking investors to help raise KSh10 million to make the tournament a success.

“This year tournament am expecting to host 20,000 people at Shianda KMTC for the PK Salasya Classic Cup. Natufuta 10M from investors. Sitaki pesa ya mama mboga ya kumi kumi,” he wrote.

A Bigger Vision for Grassroots Football

The Salasya Classic Cup has become more than just a football competition. Over the years, it has evolved into a community event that brings together players, fans, local businesses and leaders while giving young footballers a platform to showcase their talent.
By announcing a target attendance of 20,000 people, Salasya has signaled his intention to make this year’s edition the biggest yet.
The tournament has often attracted huge crowds, with residents turning up in large numbers to support their local teams while enjoying a festive atmosphere filled with entertainment and community interaction.

Why Salasya Wants Investors Instead of Public Donations

One part of Salasya’s message that caught the attention of many Kenyans was his declaration that he does not want contributions from ordinary wananchi.
His statement, “Sitaki pesa ya mama mboga ya kumi kumi,” suggests that he would rather secure sponsorship from corporate partners and investors than rely on small donations from struggling Kenyans.
The phrase has been interpreted by many as an attempt to shield low-income supporters from financial pressure while encouraging businesses to invest in a project that promotes youth empowerment through sports.
Instead of crowdfunding from the public, Salasya believes strategic partnerships can help elevate the tournament into a professionally organized sporting event.

Football as a Tool for Youth Empowerment

Beyond the competition itself, the Salasya Classic Cup has consistently been marketed as an initiative that keeps young people engaged in positive activities.
Grassroots football tournaments play a critical role in identifying hidden talent, promoting discipline and creating opportunities for players who dream of joining professional clubs.
With scouts and football enthusiasts increasingly paying attention to local competitions, the tournament has the potential to become a stepping stone for promising players seeking careers in the sport.

Netizens React to the Ambitious Target

Salasya’s post quickly sparked mixed reactions online.
While many applauded his vision and praised him for thinking big, others questioned whether raising KSh10 million from investors would be achievable.
Supporters argued that investing in grassroots sports can have lasting social and economic benefits, especially in regions where football remains one of the most popular activities among the youth.
Others noted that if successfully funded, the event could boost local businesses by attracting thousands of visitors to Shianda during the tournament.
