 Fireworks are expected on Wednesday as the KCB Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) National Term Two Games rugby sevens competition reaches the semi-final stage at MPesa Foundation Academy in Thika, Kiambu County.

The boys’ first semi-final will see traditional giants Upper Hill School take on Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho, while Butula Senior School will renew their Western Region rivalry with Friends School Bokoli in the second last-four clash.

Upper Hill booked their place in the semi-finals with a convincing 29-5 victory over Kirangari, while Cardinal Otunga left it late to edge Kwale High School 10-5 courtesy of a last-minute try.

Friends School Bokoli were equally impressive, shutting out Rift Valley champions St Anthony’s Kitale 14-0, as Butula overcame Laiser Hill Academy 17-7 to complete the semi-final line-up.

Cardinal Otunga head coach Edwin Metobo expects another stern test against the Nairobi giants. “It has been a tough championship but so far, so good. We are looking forward to the encounter against Upper Hill,” said Metobo.

Upper Hill coach Eustace Sifuna believes his side has gathered momentum and remains focused on completing a rare double after winning the national 15s title earlier this year.

“We are so far having a good campaign. Expect fireworks against Cardinal Otunga on Wednesday. Our dream of lifting both the 15s and 7s national titles is still on,” said Sifuna.

The other semi-final carries added significance as Butula seek revenge against regional rivals Bokoli, who defeated them 14-0 in the Western Region final.

Butula head coach Bonfontra Alumasa said his players are eager to overturn that result and reclaim the national title they last won in 2013.

“We are keen to reclaim the 7s title which we last won in 2013. The game against Bokoli will be a good one for us. We want to avenge the loss at the regionals,” said Alumasa.

This year’s tournament is guaranteed to produce new champions after defending champions St Peter’s Mumias were eliminated during the Western Region championships.

In the girls’ competition, defending champions Kinale Girls remained on course to retain their crown after edging Itigo Girls 12-7 in a tightly contested quarter-final.

Kimobo produced one of the tournament’s biggest upsets by eliminating last year’s finalists St Joseph’s Girls Kitale 26-20, while debutants Mbakalo defeated Nyagichenche 24-12 to reach the semi-finals. St Teresa’s Kithimu completed the last four after beating Mbagathi Girls 12-0.
