held at JKUAT/ HANDOUTNational Sevens Circuit champions KCB RFC are set to hand debuts to new signings Nygel Amaitsa and Davis Nyangige at the Prinsloo Sevens in Nakuru on Saturday as they begin the defence of their circuit crown.
The duo, who joined the bankers during the mid-season transfer window earlier this month, have quickly settled into the squad and are expected to feature in KCB’s star-studded lineup for the opening leg of the 2026 National Sevens Circuit.
Head coach Andrew Amonde believes his charges are ready to hit the ground running after an impressive pre-season. “We are excited to get back into competitive rugby and begin another National Sevens Circuit campaign.
The players have put in a tremendous amount of work during pre-season, and the focus now is to translate that preparation into strong performances on the pitch,” said Amonde.
“We know the competition will be tough from the very first tournament, but our ambition is to start the season positively and challenge for the Prinsloo Sevens title.”
KCB head into the tournament on the back of victories at the Met Sevens and Juja Sevens pre-season tournaments, although Amonde insists there is still room for improvement.
“We have worked on all facets of play that troubled us during pre-season, including ball retention, defensive alignment and our set-piece, among other things,” he added.
The former Kenya Sevens captain is expecting a fiercely contested circuit. “I believe the other teams have also prepared well, and we know we are in for a tough battle to retain our overall title.”
Captain Elvis Olukusi echoed his coach’s confidence, saying last season’s triumph has only fuelled the team’s desire for more success.
“Winning the overall circuit last season was a special achievement for everyone involved with the club, but that is now behind us. Every new season presents fresh challenges and new opportunities,” said Olukusi.
“We know what it takes to compete at the highest level, and the objective is to begin strongly at Prinsloo Sevens. The team is hungry, focused and determined to fight for the title this weekend.”
KCB have been drawn in a competitive Pool C alongside Catholic University Monks, Nondescripts and NYS Spades.
Pool A features Kabras Sugar, Kenya Harlequin, Mwamba and Embu RFC, while defending Prinsloo Sevens champions Strathmore Leos headline Pool B, where they will face Daystar Falcons, MMUST and Kisumu RFC. Pool D comprises Menengai Oilers, hosts Nakuru RFC, Impala and Blak Blad, with Oilers widely tipped as favourites to top the group.
