Zambia's Gilbert Chalwe surged to the top of the leaderboard with a late birdie blitz to take a one-shot lead after the opening round of the NCBA Limuru Open & Brackenhurst Trophy at Limuru Country Club on Friday.
This placed him in pole position in the hunt for a first victory on this year's Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) Series.
Chalwe recovered from a sluggish front nine of one-over-par 37 with a flawless four-under-par 32 on the back nine for a three-under-par 69.
He birdied the 11th, 12th, 15th and 18th holes without dropping a shot on his inward nine to move clear of the field.
"I wanted to have a strong start on the first day so that I have a chance in the competition. I was not expecting much today but there is a lot of golf to be played. Anyone can still win it because there are so many good players chasing. I will focus on what I can control and stay mentally strong because that is what will decide the winner," said Chalwe.
Muthaiga Golf Club's Jay Sandhu, who led for much of the day, slipped to second after a bogey on the 17th saw him sign for a two-under-par 70, leaving him just one stroke off the pace heading into Saturday's second round.
"I just wanted to keep finding the fairways and that worked well. I missed a few straight putts, but I am happy with where I am. Putting will be the key over the next two rounds," said Sandhu.
Teenager Kanana Muthomi of Windsor Golf Hotel & Country Club showed resilience to recover from a difficult opening stretch and card an even-par 72.
After double bogeys on the 12th and 14th and a bogey on the 13th, she responded with birdies on the second, third and fourth holes to finish tied for third alongside Sigona Golf Club's Junaid Ayaz Manji and Rwanda's Byiringiro Jacques.
Home golfer Mbachio Kimani, Felix Dusabe, Josphat Rona and Kapur Pranay shared sixth place on one-over-par 73.
The Limuru Open is one of the key stops on the Kenya Amateur Golf Championship Series, which contributes valuable ranking points ahead of the season-ending finale.
Limuru Country Club is traditionally regarded as one of the circuit's sternest tests, with its tree-lined fairways and fast greens often rewarding consistency over aggressive play.
Coming into the tournament, Vet Lab Sports Club's Michael Kamaisi led the KAGC standings on 809.20 points, ahead of Sandhu (640.00), Elvis Muigua (495.26), Eugine Wafula (472.26) and William Odek (409.56), leaving the battle for the overall series title still wide open with several events remaining.
