Sy Mary’s School Yala dominated the Siaya County secondary schools’ Term Two games after bagging three titles during the highly competitive championships.
Yala retained the boys’ football and volleyball titles. The Black Saints, as the school is popularly known, claimed the basketball 3x3 title but surrendered the rugby 7s title.
Yala also dominated lawn tennis, table tennis, and Chess.
In boys’ football, Yala, backed by their Chief Principal V.O Makanda, beat J.J Masime’s St Mary’s Nyagondo 3-0 to retain their title during the final held at Maseno School on Sunday evening.
The semis and finals were moved from Siaya to Kisumu due to fears of crowd trouble.
In the semis, Yala defeated Usenge 3-0 while Nyagondo saw off Ramba 3-2 in another entertaining encounter.
Masime said he is satisfied with the performance of his charges. “This is the first time the boys are playing at this level. I’m proud of them,” said Masime.
In the girls’ category, St Mary’s Lwak Girls drubbed Sinaga 3-0 to retain their title.
In boys’ volleyball, Yala narrowly beat a stubborn Udira 3-2 to retain their title, while in the girls’ category, Aluor Girls edged Nyanza champions Nyakongo 3-2 to win the county title.
Yala beat defending champions Sawagongo 12-10 in a tight final to win the basketball 3x3 title.
Yala’s Director of Sports, Peter Ojwala, backed the school’s teams to continue their dominance at the Nyanza regional championships.
In the girls’ category, Ng’iya Girls, the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association champions beat rivals Barchando 17-14 to retain their county title.
Ng’iya, coached by Naftali Ambala, avenged their loss to Barchando in the 5x5 competition in the first term.
Ambala is eager to retain the regional title and qualify for nationals. “Our target is to qualify for the East Africa games in Morogoro, Tanzania,” he said.
Chianda Senior School are the new rugby 7s champions. They beat Ambira 10-7 in a tense decider.
County and Nyanza regional champions Yala finished third after a 26-14 win over Sawagongo.
Yala did not field their 15s rugby players, who have already qualified for the Federation of East Africa School Games to be held in Morogoro, Tanzania in August.
Both finalists in the boys’ and girls’ categories advanced to the Nyanza regional term two championships, to be held at Homa Bay School from July 7 to 11.
In the girls’ category, Sidindi retained their title after a commanding 17-0 win over Nyakongo.
