Search and rescue operations are ongoing in Lamu County after a boat capsized at Kwa Bruno Channel near the LAPSSET area, leaving several people missing.
The incident, which occurred within the coastal waters of Lamu County, prompted an immediate multi-agency response involving maritime rescue teams and local community support.
Kenya Red Cross confirmed that four people have so far been rescued and rushed to the hospital for medical attention, while four others remain missing as search efforts continue.
“Search and rescue efforts are ongoing following a boat capsize incident at Kwa Bruno Channel near the LAPSSET area in Lamu County. Four people have been rescued and taken to the hospital, while search efforts continue for four missing persons.”
The rescue operation includes divers from the Kenya Red Cross, members of Beach Management Units, and local fishing boats mobilised to assist in the search.
Rescue teams have been combing the waters around the Kwa Bruno Channel area, with efforts intensifying as concerns grow for those still unaccounted for.
Officials have not yet disclosed the cause of the capsize, but investigations are expected once search operations conclude.
Emergency teams have urged calm among residents and assured them that operations will continue until all missing persons are located.
This follows an incident on May 9, where four people were critically injured after two boats carrying 19 people collided and capsized at Kilindi in Lamu County.
According to the Kenya Red Cross, the incident left several passengers injured, triggering an emergency response involving rescue teams and local divers.
The humanitarian agency said four casualties with critical injuries were evacuated to King Fahad Hospital for specialised treatment.
Another 14 people who sustained minor injuries were treated at the scene.
“Kenya Red Cross Action Teams, Community Disaster Responders and local divers responded to the incident,” the organisation said in a statement.
Emergency responders moved swiftly to rescue passengers and provide first aid following the accident in the coastal area.
The cause of the collision had not been established by the time of publication.
