Sonko honoured with Heroes of Africa Award for philanthropy

Former Nairobi Governor and NEDP party leader Mike Sonko has been recognised as one of Africa’s leading philanthropists.

Sonko has been honoured with the Heroes of Africa Award for his humanitarian and charitable work during a ceremony held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi.

The award, which celebrates individuals making significant contributions in philanthropy, leadership, business, peace-building and community service across the continent, recognised Sonko’s efforts in supporting vulnerable communities and championing humanitarian causes.

Speaking after receiving the accolade, Sonko described the recognition as a humbling moment and dedicated it to Kenyans and humanitarian workers across Africa.

“True leadership is not about titles or power. Leadership is about compassion. It is about touching lives, wiping tears, feeding the hungry, paying school fees for children, visiting the sick, and giving hope to those who feel abandoned,” said Sonko.

The former governor noted that the recognition comes months after he received an international award at the House of Lords in the British Parliament in the United Kingdom, saying the latest honour further motivates him to continue serving humanity.

Sonko, who also serves as the Good Deed Ambassador President, said philanthropy remains a powerful tool for restoring hope and dignity among disadvantaged communities.

He dedicated the award to “every young person struggling to achieve their dreams” and praised humanitarian workers across Africa for their sacrifices in transforming lives.

The ceremony also recognised several other prominent figures and changemakers, including Ida Odinga, Dr Ezekiel Mutua, Dr Sunday Ojile, Bhupendra Kumar and Varun Arora among others.
