Calvince Okoth, the prominent political activist better known as Gaucho, has finally broken his silence regarding the viral memes labelling him a "doctor."
Speaking on the Obinna Show podcast, Okoth addressed the online buzz that followed his recent appointment to the Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital board.
The appointment, made by Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, initially sparked a firestorm of debate across Kenyan social media. Critics and supporters alike flooded platforms with satirical images of the activist in clinical gowns, mockingly referring to him as "Dr Gaucho."
A Change in Name and Status
During the interview, Gaucho appeared unfazed by the internet's humour. He told the host that he has no issue with the "daktari" (doctor) title. He views the shift in his public identity as a natural consequence of personal growth.
He noted that as people rise in status, their titles often evolve from casual nicknames to formal designations like manager or CEO.
"I don’t have any issue with people calling me that because the more God blesses you, people will always find ways to change your title, they can even call you manager yet you are not,” Gaucho said.
Beyond the "Goon" Label
For years, Gaucho has been a fixture in Kenyan politics, often seen leading mobilisations for the Azimio la Umoja coalition. Because of this, he has frequently been dismissed by critics as a goon. He admitted that the board appointment has been instrumental in rebranding his image.
He clarified that the role is not about a "big salary" but rather about how the public perceives his potential. He compared his transition to that of a comedian who eventually earns respect as a serious professional.
Addressing those who still see him as a troublemaker, Gaucho remained defiant. He stated that he cannot control the thoughts of others. He even drew a parallel to the life of Jesus Christ, noting that even those who performed miracles faced accusations and labels.
"Do not ever worry about what a person says about you. Care about where you are going and where you have come from."
Eyes on 2027
The board member is already looking toward the next chapter of his political career. He confirmed during the interview that he is "calculating" a run for a Member of Parliament (MP) seat in the 2027 general elections.
He challenged his critics, noting that while they focus on his educational background or his past, he is moving forward with his life. He insisted that knowing one's destination is far more important than the labels others use.
While the memes continue to circulate, Gaucho seems content to let the "doctor" title stick if it means he is no longer just seen as a man "shouting for politicians."
