National Liberal Party leader Dr Augustus Muli/HANDOUTNational Liberal Party leader Dr Augustus Muli has cast doubt on former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s repeated pledge to support Kalonzo Musyoka for the presidency in the 2027 General Election.
Muli argued that the promise is part of a familiar political strategy designed to secure votes rather than genuine backing.
In a strongly worded political statement, Muli said Gachagua’s recent endorsement of Kalonzo should be treated with skepticism, particularly by voters from the Ukambani region, whom he urged not to be “used for political convenience.”
“For months, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has traversed Kenya proclaiming: ‘I will support Kalonzo Musyoka for President in 2027. Kenya owes him,’” Muli said. “Kalonzo Musyoka appears convinced. Kamba ears want to believe it. After six decades of ‘tutaona’, any pledge feels like progress. I don’t believe him for a second.”
Muli argued that Kenyan politics has historically been shaped by shifting alliances and political betrayals, accusing Gachagua of attempting to exploit Kalonzo’s support base while preserving his own future ambitions.
“In 2023, while serving as Deputy President, Gachagua branded Kalonzo ‘a failed project for Kamba.’ Today, out of office, Kalonzo is suddenly a statesman. The only thing that shifted is Gachagua’s address — from Karen to Wamunyoro,” he said.
The NLP leader further questioned Gachagua’s ability to deliver votes from the Mt. Kenya region to Kalonzo, citing previous election results that showed overwhelming support for President William Ruto and former President Uhuru Kenyatta in the region.
According to Muli, voting patterns in Mt. Kenya demonstrate that Kalonzo has consistently struggled to gain acceptance there, even during his previous alliances with opposition leader Raila Odinga.
“Mt. Kenya voters rejected Kalonzo twice as Raila’s running mate. They still believe he betrayed Kibaki by joining CORD in 2013,” Muli claimed. “That narrative has only been reinforced over the years through political campaigns branding him ‘watermelon.’”
Muli argued that if Gachagua openly campaigns for Kalonzo in Mt. Kenya, he risks losing his political influence in the region.
“No politician commits political suicide to crown another man. Gachagua won’t be the first,” he stated.
The NLP leader also challenged Gachagua to demonstrate commitment to the “Kalonzo Tosha” slogan by formally joining Kalonzo’s Wiper Patriotic Front, campaigning for him openly in Nyeri, and pledging to retire from politics should Kalonzo lose in 2027.
“If he dodges all three, Kamba have their answer: We are being used for 2027 votes, to be discarded in 2028,” Muli said.
He urged the Kamba community to abandon what he described as a culture of political dependency and instead negotiate strategically for power and influence.
“Kalonzo can be President,” Muli said. “But only if Kamba stop pleading and start billing. Gachagua won’t do it for us. We must do it ourselves.
