The closure now places urgency on candidates yet to submit or revise their course selections,

The application portal on the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) website will close at the stroke of midnight Wednesday, bringing to an end a month-long window for university and college placement.

The portal, which opened on April 8, has been receiving applications from eligible Form Four leavers seeking placement into university degree programmes as well as diploma and certificate courses in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, Kenya Utalii College, KMTC and teacher training colleges.

“KUCCPS is leaving no one behind! What are you waiting for? Log in to http://students.kuccps.ac.ke and apply now!” has been the agency’s rallying call throughout the application period, underscoring a push to maximise transition from secondary education.

The closure now places urgency on candidates yet to submit or revise their course selections, effectively locking in choices made before the midnight deadline.

Eligible candidates include those who scored C+ and above in the 2025 KCSE examination for degree courses, alongside applicants from previous cohorts seeking placement at the Open University of Kenya.

Candidates with grades ranging from A to E also qualify for various TVET programmes.

KUCCPS has advised applicants to retain their application payment reference numbers, which are required for any subsequent revisions or reapplications within the placement process.

Applicants have also been guided to rely on the 2024 cut-off points available on the portal, as the 2025 cluster points will only be determined after the application cycle closes.

The cut-off point for each programme is set by the lowest cluster weight among successfully placed applicants, making previous years’ data a key benchmark for gauging admission chances.

Sector data reflects a system under expansion, even as the deadline closes on the current placement cycle.

According to the 2026 Economic Survey, the number of universities rose from 72 to 74, while TVET institutions increased by 370 newly accredited centres to 3,126 in 2025. Teacher training colleges also grew to 98.

Enrolment trends show a mixed trajectory. Total enrolment in TVET institutions rose by 17.3 per cent to 825,484 in 2025, while vocational training colleges recorded a 7.4 per cent decline to 147,680.

Private technical and vocational colleges posted a sharp 79.7 per cent increase in enrolment to 196,790, driven by rising uptake of courses in the sub-sector.

Despite this growth, placements into TVET programmes for the 2025–26 academic year declined across categories, with diploma, certificate and artisan courses dropping by 2.6, 13.7 and 24.2 per cent, respectively.

University placements, however, registered an increase, rising from 157,762 in 2024–25 to 182,391 in 2025–26.

Placements into public universities grew by 18.2 per cent to 164,518, while private universities recorded a 3.7 per cent decline to 17,873.

Upon closure of the portal at midnight, focus will shift to processing and eventual placement, marking the next phase in the transition of thousands of KCSE graduates into higher education and training.
