Families in Marurui are grappling with heavy losses after a court order triggered the demolition of their palatial homes on a disputed 300-acre parcel along the Northern Bypass, off Kombu Road.
The residences were flattened on Tuesday morning by hired bulldozers, leaving many families homeless and wiping out investments worth millions of shillings.
Some of the other structures were still under construction.
The auctioneer enforcing the order operated under police protection following a protracted legal battle over the land.
Tension remained high as affected residents combed through the debris, salvaging whatever they could — from steel doors, window frames and fragments of household goods.
Nairobi Regional Police Commander Issa Mohamud said the families had been served with the court order.
