Police in Mombasa County have intensified operations targeting organised criminal gangs accused of terrorising residents in residential areas and social spaces.
The National Police Service says the crackdown focuses on dismantling networks linked to violent attacks and restoring safety in affected neighbourhoods, particularly in Nyali Sub-county, where recent incidents have been reported.
Authorities say the operations are intelligence-led and continue across identified hotspots.
“Organised criminal gangs, notably the infamous “Panga Boys,” have for some time posed a serious threat to communities, carrying out brazen attacks on unsuspecting individuals and undermining the safety of both residential neighbourhoods and social spaces in Mombasa County.”
Authorities say the gangs have been operating in different parts of Nyali, prompting intensified surveillance and coordinated response operations aimed at neutralising threats and safeguarding residents.
“In response, police officers in Nyali Sub-county have intensified efforts to track down those behind these acts, ensuring they are brought to justice.”
In a recent operation, officers launched a manhunt for a suspected member of the gang linked to an attack near a villa Bar, acting on intelligence and sustained vigilance before tracing the suspect to another location.
Officers successfully cornered him during the operation and conducted a search that led to the recovery of a panga concealed underneath his shirt, indicating preparedness for violence.
Police said he was arrested and is currently in custody pending arraignment in court, as investigations continue into the wider network of the gang.
“A search conducted on him led to the recovery of a panga concealed underneath his shirt—an indication of his readiness to engage in violence.”
Police say sustained operations continue and emphasise that addressing organised crime requires collaboration between the public and law enforcement agencies.
Residents have been urged to remain vigilant, report suspicious activity, and support security initiatives aimed at ensuring lasting peace and security in affected areas.
The National Police Service reiterated its commitment to maintaining public safety and ensuring that organised criminal groups are dismantled through sustained operations, coordinated intelligence work and continued presence in affected areas across the country.
Officials noted that intelligence-led policing remains central to the strategy, allowing officers to identify, track and neutralise threats posed by organised gangs operating within residential and social spaces.
