The National Police Service has issued a safety advisory warning of heightened flood risks across several parts of the country following persistent heavy rains that have already caused significant disruption and damage.

In a statement posted on X, the service said it remains on high alert in coordination with other government agencies as severe weather conditions continue to unfold.

It cautioned that the situation remains serious and requires increased public vigilance, particularly in areas prone to flooding.

Within Nairobi, authorities highlighted rising water levels in major rivers, including the Nairobi, Mathare, Ngong, Kamiti and Athi rivers.

"All these waterways drain into the larger Athi River system, which is currently running at critically high levels," NPS said.

The police warned that this could increase the risk of flooding in downstream communities, even in areas experiencing little or no rainfall.

The advisory noted that the downstream effect makes the situation unpredictable and potentially dangerous, with flash floods likely to develop rapidly and without warning. Residents were urged to exercise caution, particularly near rivers and low-lying areas.

Transport networks are also under pressure, with several key routes at risk of becoming impassable.

The service said poor visibility, waterlogged roads and uncertain driving conditions are increasing the likelihood of accidents.

“Given these conditions, the public is strongly urged to exercise extreme caution at all times by avoiding driving through or walking in moving water, as even shallow currents can be deceptively strong and capable of sweeping away vehicles or individuals,” the statement said.

The police further advised residents in flood-prone areas to be ready to move to safer ground if instructed.

It stressed the importance of staying informed through updates from the Kenya Meteorological Department and local authorities, and urged the public to follow community alerts and evacuation instructions promptly.

The National Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property during the ongoing rains.

Members of the public were encouraged to report emergencies through the toll-free lines 999 or 911, or via #FichuaKwaDCI on 0800 722 203 and WhatsApp number 0709 570 000.
