The National Transport and Safety Authority has announced a nationwide road safety crackdown following a fatal crash along the Mai Mahiu–Narok Road that claimed several lives.

In a statement, the Authority condoled with families and friends of victims of the tragic accident that occurred in the Nairegia area, describing it as a devastating loss.

Eight people died following the fatal road accident along the Mai Mahiu–Narok highway in the Nairegia area of Narok East sub-county at about 5:30pm on Saturday and involved a Mercedes Axor truck and a Toyota Voxy that were travelling in opposite directions.

A report lodged at Ntulele Police Station indicates that the truck, which was heading towards Mai Mahiu from Narok, lost control and swerved into the lane of the oncoming Voxy that was en route to Narok, leading to a head-on collision.

The two vehicles crashed head-on, resulting in a devastating impact.

The driver of the Toyota Voxy and all seven passengers on board—three men and four women—were killed instantly due to the severity of the collision.

The truck driver sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Narok Teaching and Referral Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.

Bodies of the victims were taken to the hospital’s mortuary, where they await identification and postmortem examinations.

NTSA said it is working closely with the National Police Service to investigate the circumstances that led to the crash, including what caused the driver to lose control before the head-on collision.

Findings from the probe, the Authority noted, will inform evidence-based recommendations aligned with the National Road Safety Action Plan (2024–2028).

At the same time, NTSA announced intensified enforcement under the Operation Watoto Wafike Salama campaign, targeting enhanced safety for school children as the back-to-school season begins.

A multi-agency team will roll out strict compliance checks across the country, with motorists urged to exercise caution and responsibility on the roads.

Parents, schools and transport operators have also been put on notice, with NTSA directing that all school vehicles undergo inspection to ensure they are roadworthy and safe for learners.

The Authority reiterated its commitment to working with stakeholders to improve road safety and prevent further loss of life on Kenyan roads.
