
The body belonging to Jackson Muthini, a teacher at Ngoto Boys High School in Makueni county was retrieved from Kikuuo River in the Kikumini area, Nguu/ Masumba ward on Thursday.
Muthini had been reported missing last Wednesday.
It's said he was last seen at Sultan Hamud market heading to his home in the Kasikeu area only to be found dead.
The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education (KUPPET), Makueni County branch chapter, Nicholas Mukula said they suspect the deceased might have been swept away by the river's waters since it was flooded when he went missing.
Officers from Nzaui police station retrieved the body after they found it covered in gravel in the said river.
They removed it to the Sultan Hamud hospital mortuary awaiting an autopsy.
Several drowning deaths have been reported in Makueni rivers during the ongoing rains.
Daniel Mutunga drowned in River Kyewa, Kibwezi Sub county on March 19, 2026.
The 20 - year - old businessman from Ulininzi village was swept away while crossing swollen River Kyewa at night. He was headed to Kalaani from Matiliku market during the incident.
The body was later found a few metres from where he had drowned with bruises on his legs and forehead.
Makueni acting County Commissioner Moses Gicharu appealed to residents to avoid crossing swollen rivers for their own safety.
"I appeal to residents of Makueni County to avoid crossing rivers as you can't tell the magnitude of the water just by looking. They should wait for the water to subside or use an alternative route to avert loss of lives," Gicharu said.
The administrator called on motorists plying various roads across the county to use alternative ones instead of risking to cross flooded rivers.
Several other drowning incidents have been reported across the country during the ongoing rains.
