The Ministry of Interior and National Administration has issued a flood and weather advisory for Kenya’s coastal region, warning beachgoers and fishermen to temporarily suspend activities due to expected strong winds, thunderstorms and rough sea conditions.

The ministry said rainfall is expected to intensify over the weekend, particularly along the Coast and in the Northeastern and Southeastern lowlands, prompting government rescue and recovery agencies to be placed on high alert as the situation develops and weather patterns continue to worsen in affected areas.

The advisory comes as current weather conditions have already led to serious impacts, including displacement of residents, collapse of houses, flooding of both public and private facilities, and damage to electricity infrastructure in several affected areas, highlighting the growing risks associated with the ongoing rains and storms.

The ministry has urged members of the public to exercise extreme caution due to the increased risk of flooding, strong winds and lightning strikes, advising beach users and fishermen to suspend movement during periods of strong winds, rough conditions and thunderstorms until the weather stabilises.

During thunderstorms, the public has been advised to avoid standing under trees, near metal fences, on rooftops, in open compounds, on the beach or in small boats, in order to reduce exposure to lightning strikes and other weather-related hazards.

Authorities have reiterated that the public should remain alert and strictly follow all issued safety guidance as conditions evolve over the coming days, with emergency and recovery teams remaining on standby amid the heightened risk of further flooding and storm-related disruptions across vulnerable regions.
