There was a tragedy in California, Nairobi, when a 64-year-old man was stabbed and reportedly killed in an argument over a debt of Sh20 for mutura.
The man was selling the food when an argument broke out with another man.
The man was stoned to death at the scene minutes later, police said.
Police said Elijah Kinyanjui was selling mutura in the area when a man came and grabbed the food valued at Sh20. Witnesses said he had promised to pay for it.
After he had finished eating the food, Kinyanjui sought payment for the same, which angered the man for unclear reasons. He told him he did not have the needed money.
This degenerated to a fight that saw the man pick up a knife that Kinyanjui was using in his business and stabbed him in the chest, fatally.
The man was rushed to a local hospital, where he succumbed to the injuries.
By then, a mob had attacked, and the man died at the scene, Nairobi police boss Issa Mohamud said.
Both bodies were moved to the mortuary pending other procedures, police said.
Mohamud discouraged mob lynching, terming it criminal.
“We are urging the public to desist from lynching suspects. Suspects should be surrendered to the police for processing and prosecution,” he said.
He added that police are investigating cases of mob lynching for possible action.
Such incidents have been on the rise amid a campaign to address them. Up to three cases are reported daily in the worrying trend.
Elsewhere in Kileleshwa, Nairobi, police said they are investigating an incident where a member of the street family was found dead in a trench.
The cause of the death was not immediately known, police said as they moved the body to the mortuary.
The body was found near the Kirichwa River, police said.
In Nalondo, Bungoma County, one Geoffrey Wekesa, 30, was found dead on a footpath.
Police said the body had deep cuts in the head, mouth and private parts. The motive of the murder was not immediately known, police said as they moved the body to the mortuary pending an autopsy.
Police said they are investigating a murder in the incident, but they have yet to establish the motive for the same.
Cases of murder have been on the rise in separate parts of the country amid efforts to address the same.
Police say they have solved some of the incidents so far.
