Journalist Paul Letiwa/HANDOUT

Investigative freelance journalist Paul Letiwa has been charged with trespass with intent to commit an offence.

He was arraigned before the Maralal Law Courts in Samburu County.

The charge stems from a complaint lodged by Samburu Senator Steve Ltumbesi Lelegwe.

The journalist is facing charges of unlawfully entering premises with the intent to commit an offence, allegations that he is now expected to contest during the trial.

The alleged trespass happened on February 13, 2026, when Letiwa, who was reportedly invited to the senator's home in the Maralal, Kilimani area, for an interview got into trouble after taking photos of some of the furniture in the house.

During the proceedings, Letiwa denied the charge, entering a not-guilty plea as the case formally commenced in court.

The matter follows a revision of the initial charge sheet.

Before being presented in court, Letiwa was held in court cells ahead of his arraignment.

The proceedings subsequently took place in open court, marking the first substantive step in the matter.

The presiding magistrate adjourned the matter, scheduling it for mention and further hearing on May 18, 2026.

The dispute is now within the judicial process as the court prepares to determine the merits of the case.
