Police have arrested several suspected drug traffickers and seized a substantial haul of bhang in intelligence-led operations carried out across the country, as the fight against narcotics intensifies.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in a statement on Monday said the crackdown targeted key areas in Nakuru, Bungoma and Elgeyo Marakwet counties.

“All suspects are currently in custody, undergoing processing pending arraignment,” DCI said, adding that the recovered drugs have been kept safely as exhibits.

In Nakuru, officers on patrol arrested a 32-year-old man after his behaviour raised suspicion.

"A swift search of his backpack revealed cannabis sativa cleverly concealed, ready for the streets,” the DCI said.

Police believe the drugs were meant for distribution, and the arrest helped stop the supply before it reached users.

In Bungoma county, officers in Bumula acted on a tip-off from members of the public and intercepted a speeding motorcycle.

Two suspects were arrested after they were found carrying four bales of bhang.

“Acting on a tip-off, officers intercepted a speeding motorcycle,” DCI said, confirming the recovery of the two suspects.

In a separate operation in Kaptalamwa, Elgeyo Marakwet county, police arrested a 30-year-old man.

According to the DCI, the suspect was found with 172 rolls of bhang during a targeted operation based on intelligence reports. Police said the suspect was cornered and could not escape.

“These operations underscore the National Police Service's commitment to the war against narcotics trafficking in the country,” the DCI said.

Authorities warned that drug trafficking remains a serious problem, especially among young people, and is often linked to crime and insecurity.

Police said the use and sale of such drugs continue to harm communities.

The DCI has urged the public to work closely with law enforcement by sharing information that can help stop drug networks.

“We remain committed to dismantling these networks,” the agency said.

The suspects are expected to be taken to court as investigations continue, with police promising to sustain the crackdown across the country.
