GSU against the Kenya Army in action in a past match / CHARLENE MALWAGeneral Service Unit (GSU) have shifted focus to the men’s African Club Volleyball Championship set for April 20 to May 3 in Kigali, Rwanda.
The defending Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) league champions head into the continental tournament buoyed by solid domestic performances, but aware of areas that still need sharpening.
GSU recently defeated National Youth Service (NYS) 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-19), Kenya Army 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-23), The Beast 3-1 (25-19, 25-13, 20-25, 25-20) in the Kenya Cup, and Kenya Prisons Nairobi 3-1.
However, their recent outings also exposed inconsistencies in high-pressure moments. They fell 3-2 to arch-rivals Kenya Prisons (25-21, 22-25, 21-25, 26-24, 6-15), lost another five-setter to KAPU 3-2 (21-25, 25-22, 25-21, 24-26, 15-5), and suffered a straight-sets defeat to Trailblazers.
“We have improved our structure, but at the continental level, we must be more clinical in key moments,” captain Emmanuel Kogo said. “Fine margins continue to define our performance curve.”
Head coach Gideon Tarus said the team’s focus has now shifted fully to continental readiness. “The league is helping us rebuild confidence, but Africa demands a higher level of discipline and execution,” Tarus said.
He added that structured wins have boosted morale, while key performance indicators such as serve-receive stability, blocking coordination and transition play have shown progress.
GSU now turn their attention to Kigali, where their campaign will depend on converting domestic form into sustained execution, especially in tight sets that have previously cost them.
That challenge remains fresh from last year’s tournament, where GSU exited at the Round of 16 after a straight-sets loss to Rwanda’s APR (27-25, 25-21, 25-19). They pushed hard in the opening set before fading in the latter stages.
“We are focusing on step-by-step improvement; every match now is preparation for the bigger stage,” Kogo added.
