Detectives in Kwale are investigating the killing of an elderly man found dead in his home in Samburu Sub-County.
Police said the incident was reported by the deceased’s son, who alerted authorities that his father, identified as 87-year-old Mwavadu Ndawa, had been found dead on Thursday, April 16.
Coast regional police commander Ali Nuno said the body was discovered by the deceased’s granddaughter, who found him lying on his bed in a pool of blood.
Officers who visited the scene established that the victim had sustained stab wounds to the back of the neck and the left ear, believed to have been inflicted by unknown assailants using a sharp object. He died from the injuries.
The scene was processed by investigators before the body was moved to Kinango Sub-County Hospital mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination.
However, the case has taken a puzzling turn after a separate identification at Kwale County Hospital mortuary indicated the body was that of Hassan Bakari Ngare, a 40-year-old man from Maweni Village in Likoni Sub-County.
The identification was made by his wife and other relatives, and a postmortem examination has already been conducted.
The conflicting identities have raised questions, with police working to establish the true identity of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding the killing.
No arrests have been made, and investigations are ongoing.
In a separate incident, police in Kisumu have arrested a murder suspect who had been on the run following the killing of a woman in what police described as a suspected love triangle dispute.
The suspect surrendered at Kombewa Police Station on Thursday afternoon.
Police said the suspect is wanted in connection with the murder of Elizabeth Adhiambo Yogo, a 48-year-old woman who was killed at Border Village in Manyatta B area within Kisumu East Sub-County.
Investigations indicate that the suspect had previously inherited the deceased in 2018 following the death of her husband, in line with local customary practices.
Police said the relationship later turned sour, culminating in a fatal altercation reportedly linked to a love triangle.
According to police, the incident occurred at night at the woman’s rented house, where she was fatally stabbed. The suspect then fled and remained in hiding until his surrender.
Following his surrender, the suspect was placed in custody and is expected to be arraigned in court once investigations are complete.
Police have not disclosed further details and said the case remains under investigation.
Meanwhile, three people were found dead in separate suspected drowning incidents.
Police said drowning cases have been on the rise, attributing the trend to heavy rains being experienced in the country.
The incidents were reported in Kinangop in Nyandarua County, Kasala in Kitui County, and Brigadier in Bungoma County.
In Nyandarua, police said a three-year-old boy who had been missing was found floating in River Tulasha. In Kitui, a 16-year-old boy drowned in an artificial dam.
In Bungoma, a 22-year-old man who had been missing for days was found dead in River Nzoia.
The bodies were moved to mortuaries pending further procedures, police said on Friday.
Police added that more than 120 people have died in separate incidents linked to floods across the country in the past three months.
The floods have displaced many families amid warnings of more rains during the April–June period.
The government says efforts are ongoing to assist those displaced.
