Several students were injured following a structural incident at the University of Kabianga on Monday afternoon, after a section of mortar detached from a building and triggered panic among learners.

In a statement issued by the office of the Vice-Chancellor, the university said the incident occurred at around 1:00 p.m. at Lecture Theatre Block Four, where debris from a slab fell onto a ramp as students attended a lecture.

The falling material caused alarm, leading to a stampede as students scrambled to escape. In the chaos, some students reportedly jumped from the upper floor in an attempt to flee, resulting in injuries.

“We regret to inform the public that some students sustained injuries during the incident. The injured students were promptly rushed to Kericho County Referral Hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention,” the statement read.

“We sincerely appreciate the swift response from Kericho County authorities, as well as the assistance provided by other stakeholders during this unfortunate incident. Engineers from the State Department for Public Works have been called to assess the building.”

The institution expressed regret over the incident and wished the affected students a quick recovery.

University management also commended the swift response by county authorities and other emergency responders who assisted during the incident.

Engineers from the State Department for Public Works have since been called in to assess the structural integrity of the affected building and determine the cause of the failure.

The university said further updates will be provided as investigations continue.

After the relocation, Kabianga Farmers Training Center was established in 1959 on the premises. Its objective was to serve as an Agricultural Training facility for farmers from the South Rift and beyond.

Kabianga Farmers Training Center became Kabianga Campus of Moi University in May 2007. In May, 2009, the University Campus was elevated to Kabianga University College

In March 2013, the University of Kabianga was awarded a Charter by former President Mwai Kibaki.
