Siaya Governor James Orengo has called on Parliament to urgently establish a joint committee to investigate the violent attack on a Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi in Kisumu, warning that the incident poses a serious threat to democracy and public safety.

Speaking at Kisumu Central Police Station, Orengo urged both the National Assembly and the Senate to table a motion to form an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the assault, which left the lawmaker nursing injuries.

“I am appealing to Parliament to form a committee to enquire into the beating and injury of the senator. Through that mechanism, those involved will have to answer questions before the public,” he said.

The governor said a parliamentary probe would provide an independent and transparent platform to establish the truth, especially amid concerns that investigations by security agencies were not progressing as expected.

He noted that several suspects captured in CCTV footage and widely identified on social media were yet to be arrested, raising questions about the commitment to justice.

According to Orengo, failure to take decisive action risks emboldening criminal elements and normalising violence, particularly in politically charged environments.

He warned that such incidents, if left unchecked, could escalate and affect not only political leaders but also ordinary citizens going about their daily activities.

The governor described the attack as part of a broader pattern of rising political intolerance, which he said had reached alarming levels in the country.

“This is not just intolerance. This is political terrorism. In my long political career, I have never witnessed such a situation,” he said.

Orengo added that Parliament’s intervention would help restore public confidence in the rule of law and ensure accountability within state institutions mandated to protect citizens.

He urged lawmakers to act swiftly and decisively, cautioning that continued inaction could undermine constitutional guarantees, including the right to life and security.

The governor further called on authorities to ensure those responsible are brought to justice, saying the country must not allow a culture of impunity to take root.
