Migori Governor Ochilo Ayacko addressing locals within the county during President William Ruto's visit on March 23,2026./Faith MatetePresident William Ruto on Monday launched a series of development projects in Migori County, using the occasion to push his administration’s agenda on housing, healthcare, energy, and education, while cautioning against the growing subdivision of agricultural land.
Speaking at Mabera Grounds in Kuria West Constituency, the President handed over keys to 60 newly completed affordable housing units under the government’s Affordable Housing Programme.
He said the initiative is not only addressing the housing deficit but also protecting farmland from excessive subdivision.
Ruto warned that the continued division of land for settlement is threatening food production, noting that more Kenyans should embrace planned housing, especially in rural areas.
“The Affordable Housing Programme, particularly in rural settings, will help reduce land fragmentation and support sustainable farming,” he said.
During the event, the President also laid the foundation stone for the Mabera Modern Market, a project expected to boost local trade and improve working conditions for traders.
In Uriri Constituency, Ruto officially opened the Piny-Owacho Level Three Hospital and pledged full government support in equipping the facility and deploying adequate medical personnel.
He urged residents to register with the Social Health Authority (SHA), saying it would ease the burden of medical costs.
He revealed that the government has already disbursed Sh2.4 billion to hospitals in Migori County through the scheme over the past year.
At the same time, the President inspected the ongoing construction of the Kegonga Sub-County Hospital in Kuria East, a Sh345 million project aimed at expanding access to quality healthcare.
He also announced additional investments in the area, including a Sh200 million modern market in Kegonga town and Sh150 million for the construction of hostels at Kegonga KMTC to support healthcare training.
The President added that Sh2.3 billion is being used to expand electricity connectivity to households. This will see 20,000 people connected to electricity.
Ruto further said the government has allocated Sh28 billion for various projects in Migori County, including 8000 affordable housing units, 23 markets, and 8000 student hostels.
"There is no other administration that has invested such an amount in Migori at once apart from this broad-based government,” he said.
He noted that the investments signal a shift in development, saying Migori is now firmly included in the national development agenda.
"I can proudly say that Migori is now part of the development equation of the Republic of Kenya because we agreed under the broad-based government that no region will be left behind,” he said, urging residents to support the ongoing initiatives.
On the blue economy, the President said the government has committed Sh9.8 billion to unlock the potential of Lake Victoria. The funds will facilitate the construction of 10 fish landing sites from Busia to Migori, including key projects such as the Muhuru Bay fish landing site and the Muhuru Bay pier and Sori fish landing site among others.
To improve safety for fishermen, he said the government is also building a Sh250 million rescue centre equipped with modern rescue boats to respond to accidents on the lake.
“We want to protect our fishermen. With a fully equipped rescue centre and modern boats, we will be able to save lives and support fishing as a key economic activity,” he said.
Governor Ochilo Ayacko backed the president's development record, urging residents in the Nyanza region to support his leadership.
Ayacko said the projects being rolled out demonstrate a commitment to equitable development across the country, regardless of past voting patterns.
"It is only President Ruto who has ensured development reaches all regions, irrespective of how people voted,” he said.
