Action between Nyakach Girls’ and Kadika /ANGWENYI GICHANA

Nyanza region basketball champions Nyakach Girls started their title defence on a positive note, edging Kadika 77-28 as Term One games kicked off at Rapogi in Migori county.

Coached Kevin Otuoma said: “Our focus here is to retain our title. We are well prepared for this even though it will be a competitive championship.”

They led 42-7 at the break.

Favourites and last year’s semi-finalists, Tuk Jowi, edged Kereri Girls from Kisii 46-18.

In girls’ hockey, Ng’iya Girls started their hunt for the title with a comfortable 4-0 win over Huma Girls. Lucy Akoth struck twice as Faith Atieno and Hellen Joy added one each.

Coach Oduor Nyadida said: “It was a good game but the girls were fatigued since we played immediately after arrival. We want to compete and win the regional title. We want to qualify for the nationals and East Africa games.”

In boys’ handball, three-time Nyanza region champions Manyatta beat St Mary’s Yala 25-23 in a closely contested game.

“It was expected to be a tough game. I’m happy we emerged victorious. Our target is to win our fourth consecutive title,” said Manyatta coach Andrew Owino.

Games involving Nyamira county teams were postponed after a no-show. They were reportedly stranded at the county headquarters.
