Known off-stage as Macline Chesi, the young and determined DJ from Kasarani is carving her own path in an industry largely dominated by men.

In an exclusive interview, DJ Elina Finesse opens up about her journey, challenges, and the passion that fuels her growing career.

From Campus Graduate to DJ Booth

DJ Elina Finesse completed her studies in 2023 at Equip Africa Institute, a branch of Mt. Kenya University, where she pursued Health Records and IT.

Like many young graduates, she faced the harsh reality of unemployment after school.

Instead of waiting indefinitely for an opportunity, she made a bold decision—to chase her passion.

A Passion Born from Childhood

Her love for music didn’t start recently—it has been part of her life for as long as she can remember.

“I’ve always loved music—listening to it and playing it. DJing came naturally to me because it’s something I’ve grown up enjoying,” she said.

Inspired by established DJs like DJ Lisney and DJ B, she found motivation to pursue her dream professionally.

“They are my role models. I look up to them so much and their work keeps me inspired.”

Breaking Barriers in a Male-Dominated Industry

Despite her talent and passion, DJ Elina Finesse admits the journey hasn’t been easy.

The DJ industry, especially in Kenya, is still largely male-dominated.

“DJing is mostly seen as a man’s job. The competition is stiff, and it’s harder for female DJs to get gigs because male DJs are often preferred,” she explained.

However, she refuses to let that discourage her.

With the support of her manager and a growing network, she has managed to secure gigs and build her reputation.
