
The officers, travelling from Elwak police station to Udole Pit on relief duties, were aboard a station vehicle carrying 15 personnel when the incident occurred at 6.30 am.
Police said the attack took place as the vehicle was overtaking a bus belonging to Habib Bus Company.
A directional IED detonated, striking the police cruiser and causing significant damage, including shattered windows and damaged doors. Two rear windows of the bus were also shattered.
Six officers sustained injuries, with another reservist reporting abdominal and leg injuries and a cut above the eye.
The remaining personnel were stable and accounted for.
Security teams, including the subcounty security committee and Kenya Defence Forces personnel, launched combing operations in pursuit of the attackers, but no arrests were immediately reported.
The injured were flown to Nairobi for further treatment.
The area, near the Kenya–Somalia border, has seen repeated militant activity, prompting increased security deployment.
Authorities continue to urge residents to cooperate with security forces to reduce attacks, which have hindered development in the region and frequently target security personnel.
Kenya launched Operation Linda Nchi in October 2011, following a series of attacks, particularly along the Coast, to protect national security and key economic sectors such as tourism.
Some areas have since been cleared of militant presence, though threats persist in border regions.
Investigations into the Mandera attack are ongoing.
