Mention Limuru and it brings to mind beautiful, endless greenery with fresh tea farms and cool air blowing from across the hills. That alone makes a statement for this quiet town that has existed long before the colonial days.

Limuru is located in Kiambu county, the fastest-growing county in Kenya, which marked an 86 per cent growth in the 2024-25 financial year. Located about 35km from Nairobi, Limuru is roughly an hour’s drive from the capital, offering a calm escape from the city’s fast-paced environment.

But Limuru is not only a quiet town that flaunts its beauty but also a growing economic hub. It is home to one of the world’s best tea farms that dates back to the pre-colonial days.

In the 1890s to 1900s, the British settled in Limuru due to its cool climate, fertile land, proximity to Nairobi and efficient transportation networks, including railways and roads. As a result, the colonial government introduced tea, coffee and dairy farming, which did very well in the area. And soon enough, the British gained ownership of the land and Limuru was dubbed “the white highlands”.

Even after the exit of colonialists, farming still remains the cornerstone and main economic activity in Limuru. Today, Limuru’s scenery attracts both local and international tourists. Students from across the country also come to visit, touring farms such as Kiambethu Farm and Teagoni Farm to learn about agriculture.
