Nairobi has been hit by devastating floods following heavy overnight rainfall, leaving 23 people dead and causing widespread disruption across the city.
The National Police Service (NPS) confirmed the fatalities as part of an ongoing emergency response.
The floods have damaged property, forced road closures, and displaced residents in several parts of Nairobi.
The most affected areas include Mukuru, Kibra, Mathare, Huruma, South B and C, Pipeline/Embakasi, Roysambu, Kahawa West, Githurai, and parts of Westlands.
Key highways such as Uhuru Highway, Mombasa Road, the Thika Superhighway, Jogoo Road, Enterprise Road, and Lang’ata Road have also been impacted, with some sections impassable due to rising waters.
In response, the NPS launched immediate search and rescue operations overnight, working alongside other stakeholders to reach people trapped by the floods.
“We are pleased to report that 29 people were successfully rescued from various locations and are receiving the necessary support,” said Muchiri Nyaga, Director of Corporate Communication and spokesperson for the National Police Service.
Authorities said the response teams remain fully deployed, actively responding to distress calls and continuing with search and rescue missions.
“We are monitoring the situation closely and are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all Kenyans, residents, and visitors,” Muchiri added.
The NPS has urged the public to exercise extreme caution as the rains continue.
Motorists and pedestrians are reminded to observe the Highway Code and stay vigilant. Residents are encouraged to report emergencies through toll-free numbers 999, 911, and 112.
The floods highlight the risks posed by Nairobi’s inadequate drainage in the face of sudden heavy rainfall. Authorities continue to coordinate relief efforts, focusing on rescuing trapped residents and preventing further loss of life.
Muchiri emphasised the commitment of the NPS and partner agencies to public safety.
“The National Police Service, working alongside other agencies, remains fully committed to ensuring the safety and security of the public,” he said.
As Nairobi residents contend with the flooding, the authorities have called for patience and vigilance, urging communities to prioritise safety and follow official advisories. The scale of the disaster underscores the need for continued preparedness as heavy rains persist.
