Nairobi motorists can use the Nairobi Expressway for free tonight as the city battles heavy rainfall and flooding along Mombasa Road.
The announcement came from MOJA Expressway Company, which said the offer applies from 9 pm to 11 pm.
In a tweet, the company advised, “Due to the ongoing downpour and flooding along the A8 (Mombasa Road), MOJA extends free usage of the Nairobi Expressway to all motorists from 2100 to 2300 hrs.”
The move aims to ease traffic congestion and provide a safer alternative for drivers navigating flooded streets.
Mombasa Road, a key artery linking Nairobi to the coast, has been particularly affected by water accumulation, slowing movement and creating hazardous conditions.
MOJA also urged commuters to prioritise safety. The company shared a rescue hotline for urgent situations, stating, “In case of any emergencies, please call our rescue hotline 0111039888.”
Traffic authorities and emergency responders have been on high alert, warning drivers to exercise caution during the rainy spell.
Heavy rains have disrupted daily travel, leaving motorists stranded and causing delays in several parts of the city.
The Nairobi Expressway, a toll road running parallel to some of the most congested routes, has become a critical option for commuters seeking quicker and safer passage.
By temporarily waiving tolls, MOJA hopes to reduce the number of vehicles stuck on waterlogged roads and minimise accidents.
Residents and drivers have welcomed the initiative, noting that free access during peak flooding hours is a practical relief.
Many expressed appreciation on social media, highlighting the move as timely support for those travelling late in the evening.
Authorities have reminded the public to stay vigilant and avoid driving through deep water. With continued rainfall expected, similar measures may be needed in the coming days to ensure smooth traffic flow and protect motorists.
