At least two suspected bandits were shot dead in a police ambush in Daaba, Isiolo County, on Sunday afternoon.

Police said the two were part of a group of about 20 men allegedly heading out on a livestock robbery mission when officers intercepted them on March 1, 2026.

The group was crossing the Ngaremara area when they were ambushed. Two of the suspects were fatally shot, while others are believed to have escaped, possibly with injuries.

Police have asked health facilities in the area to report any individuals seeking treatment for gunshot wounds.

An AK-47 rifle loaded with nine rounds of ammunition and two mobile phones were recovered from the deceased, police said.

The bodies were moved to the mortuary pending identification and post-mortem examinations.

Daaba and its environs have recently witnessed a surge in banditry attacks, prompting protests from residents who have been demanding swift government intervention.

In response, the government has deployed additional security personnel to the region. Multi-agency teams have also been equipped to confront the threat in Isiolo and other affected counties.

The area is among those under Operation Maliza Uhalifu, a security initiative targeting banditry and related crimes. The operation covers Baringo, West Pokot, Turkana, Samburu, Marsabit, Meru and Isiolo counties.

Authorities say the operation has helped contain crime in several hotspots, although sporadic incidents persist.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said the government’s long-term strategy goes beyond security crackdowns and includes sustainable development initiatives.

He said plans are underway to distribute subsidised agricultural inputs and provide extension services to residents to revive farming as an alternative source of livelihood.

Murkomen also ordered fresh vetting of all National Police Reservists as part of efforts to strengthen operations.

In addition, he announced a policy shift placing National Police Reservists under the direct command of Officers Commanding Police Stations to streamline coordination and enhance accountability in the fight against banditry.
