Suna West Member of Parliament Peter Masara has urged the national government to expedite the completion of Suna Marindi Modern Market to ease difficulties faced by traders and residents.

Earlier this week, River Migori overflowed, causing floods that disrupted businesses, affected movement, and put families at serious risk.

During a tour of the market to assess the flood damage, Masara stressed the need to provide traders with a safer, more organised space for business activities.

“We want the market to be completed for the business community to enjoy the fruits of paying taxes, by decongesting the market and avoiding calamities like floods caused by River Migori,” Masara said.

The MP, who serves on the Budget Committee in the National Assembly, assured that funds would be allocated to construct additional kiosks within the modern market before its official opening.

He pledged to champion the market’s completion before the end of the year, including a ring road to improve access to the facility.

“I will present a statement in the National Assembly next week regarding the Marindi Market progress to ensure the business community in Migori benefits from their taxes,” Masara said.

The construction of the Suna Marindi Modern Market, implemented through the Kenya National Highways Authority, has reached an advanced stage. Once completed, the market is set to ease trading for hundreds of local entrepreneurs who have long endured harsh weather and muddy conditions.

The market will include road upgrades, a ring road, and spacious parking areas.

Masara also discussed coordination with government agencies, including the National Disaster Operations Centre, to provide immediate assistance to those affected by flooding.
