Kenya’s rising fencing sensation Kinoti Kiara/HANDOUT

Kenya’s rising fencing sensation Kinoti Kiara announced himself on the continental stage in emphatic fashion, slicing through Africa’s finest to claim gold at the African Junior and Cadet Fencing Championships in Dakar on Thursday.

Competing in the Cadet Men’s Individual Sabre, Kiara delivered a composed and tactically sharp performance to secure Kenya’s first major youth continental fencing statement in recent memory.

From the preliminary pools, the Tsavora Fencing trainee fenced with measured aggression — dictating tempo, reading distance with precision and closing tight bouts with authority. As the competition intensified in the direct elimination rounds, Kiara tightened his guard, sharpened his blade control and maintained disciplined footwork to edge past opponents from Africa’s traditional fencing powerhouses.

The gold marks a significant step in the young sabreur’s upward trajectory. Kiara had previously signalled his promise at the African Youth Games in Angola, where he clinched bronze in the sabre category and contributed to Kenya’s 14-medal haul.

In Dakar, however, he went a step further. Egypt’s Hamza H. Abuhalwa settled for silver after a spirited run to the final, while Morocco’s Mohamed El Bounjaimi and Togo’s Ilan Tchaa Arou claimed bronze in a fiercely contested field that reflected Africa’s growing technical depth in fencing.

Beyond the medal ceremony, Kiara’s triumph underscores Kenya’s incremental investment in structured training programmes, athlete conditioning cycles and increased exposure to international sparring circuits.

“This victory is a proud moment for Kenya and a testament to the hard work put in by our athletes and technical team,” said Fred Chege, president of the Kenya Fencing Federation.

“Kinoti’s achievement demonstrates that Kenya is ready to compete and win at the highest levels in Africa,” he added, describing the gold as both a culmination of deliberate grassroots development and a catalyst for future success.
