Officials are investigating an incident in which two miners were killed at a gold mining site in Lolgorian, Transmara, Narok County.
Police and witnesses said the miners had entered a tunnel searching for gold deposits on the evening of February 12, 2026, when part of it collapsed, fatally trapping them.
According to police, Washington Omondi, 27, and Fred Kisaka, 25, had entered a tunnel at an abandoned site when it caved in.
Their bodies were later retrieved and moved to the local mortuary pending autopsies.
Officials said the deaths are the latest in a series of incidents at gold mining sites, where tens of miners have been killed under similar circumstances.
Authorities added that measures are being developed to enhance safety for mining groups.
Similar incidents have occurred in Kakamega, Migori, West Pokot, and Nandi counties, which also have gold mining activities.
A police squad has been established to crack down on illegal gold mining, although resistance from industry cartels has been reported.
In a separate case, police in Khwisero, Kakamega County, are investigating the death of a boda boda rider who was attacked and robbed of his motorcycle.
Joab Khaka died in hospital following the incident. His body was moved to the mortuary for an autopsy and other procedures.
Police are also probing the murder of a 27-year-old man found outside his residence in Maraba Estate, Kakamega Town.
Benjamin Obangi’s body was discovered in a scrap metal yard where he lived, with head injuries, on February 12. The motive for the killing is not yet known.
The body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy and further investigation.
Meanwhile, police have arrested three suspects linked to a series of kidnappings and robberies with violence in parts of Kiambu County.
The arrests were carried out by detectives from the DCI headquarters on Wednesday in an intelligence-led operation in Kiandutu and Githurai.
Police recovered nine mobile phones and assorted master keys from the suspects.
Authorities said the operation followed a rise in incidents of robbery and abduction, with intelligence linking the suspects to the crimes.
The suspects remain in custody pending further investigation and arraignment.
