Nairobi City Stars players celebrate at Gusii Stadium. They face Migori Youth on Saturday/ANGWENYI GICHANA

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) National Super League enters a defining phase this weekend with log leaders Migori Youth hosting Nairobi City Stars in a high-stakes second-leg clash at Awendo Green Stadium.

Migori Youth, coached by Sammy Otulo, sit top on 37 points — level with Mombasa United but ahead on goal difference — as the promotion race to the FKF Premier League intensifies.

Michael Olunga Foundation Academy (MOFA) are third on 35 points, while Equity Bank (33) and Fortune Sacco (32) remain firmly in contention, underlining the tight battle at the summit.

Otulo’s charges have built their campaign on a formidable home record, going unbeaten in 19 matches at Awendo. The club has also strengthened its squad in the mid-season window, bringing in experienced players to boost the push for promotion.

The latest arrival is striker Michael Esabwa from Mara Sugar. “I believe this is our season. We have strengthened the team by signing experienced players,” said Otulo, who is targeting a place in the SportPesa League next term.

City Stars, themselves former Premier League campaigners, will provide a stern test as they seek to upset the leaders and revive their own ambitions.

Elsewhere, promotion-chasing Equity Bank travel to Vapour Grounds in Ngong to face Naivas FC, while former top-flight sides FC Talanta and Vihiga United clash at Ruaraka Grounds.

Soy United, one of the form teams in the division, head to Nairobi for a date with Kibera Black Stars at Vapour Grounds in Kawangware. Soy are unbeaten this year, with four wins and a draw — the stalemate coming against Migori Youth. On Wednesday, they underlined their progress by holding Premier League side Kakamega Homeboyz to a 2-2 draw in a friendly.

At the other end of the table, struggling Mwatate FC have opted for a squad overhaul, signing 15 players during the mid-season transfer window in a bid to avoid relegation.

Coach Evans Mafuta believes the reinforcements will help steady the ship. Among the new faces are Brighton Kitemwe (Darajani Gogo) and Abubakar Musha (Soy United), alongside Calvin Maree (Butali Sugar), Wellington Khakuli (Spitfire), Norman Ogaye (Global Connections), Michael Wekesa (Wabu Stars), Noah Wanjala (Elite Academy), Francis Wakutwa (unattached) and Derrick Musambo (Kayole All Stars). Others include Meshack Emuria (Samitsi), Chrisando Barasa (Malaba Giants), Davies Wekesa (AP Kayongo), George Liseche (AP Seals) and Salim Mnyembo (Mwatate All Stars).
