Nairobi Deputy Governor Njoroge Muchiri has joined a growing list of those seeking to oust their bosses in next year’s general elections.
Muchiri was among the eight who registered as aspirants for the position of governor of Nairobi under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.
The group met President William Ruto in State House last week.
In registering, DG Muchiri has given clear indications of what he will be competing with his current boss, Johnson Sakaja and former governor Evans Kidero for the UDA ticket.
He joins his peers, among them Kakamega’s Ayub Savula, who decamped from DAP-K party to join UDA, saying he will take on his boss Fernandes Baraza of ODM.
In 2022, Savula was eyeing the seat but was convinced at the last minute by former Azimio leader Raila Odinga and retired President Uhuru Kenyatta to back Baraza as his running mate.
He explained that he had quit his party to bolster his chances of getting the seat on a ruling party ticket.
"The process to officially move from DAP has started. I know ODM and UDA will work together, and I want to say I will not align with the opposition. I will personally stand with my president," Savula said on Monday, February 2.
In Homa Bay, DG Oyugi Magwanga has already launched his campaigns, having fallen out with his boss, Gladys Wanga.
Speaking last week in East Kamagak Ward, Kasipul Constituency, Magwanga said he has been frustrated in his office, limiting his ability to serve the people of Homa Bay County as the DG.
"In 2027, I am going to be on the ballot as the governor for Homa Bay County. Let her prepare that we are going to face off," Magwanga said.
Last month, Siaya’s William Oduol declared that he had started to campaign in a bid to oust his boss and veteran politician James Orengo.
“I would like to state that today I have declared my candidacy for Governor of Siaya County on an ODM ticket. I’m presenting myself for nominations and thereafter offer myself to contest against the rest of the other candidates. I’m going to contest in the ODM nominations, hopefully with James Orengo, na mimi nangoja yeye,” Oduol said on January 10.
In Nyamira, speculation is rife that Deputy
Governor James Gesami is still angling for a seat that he had eyed in both
2017 and 2022.
The former West Mugirango MP is a member of the ODM party, while his boss, Amos Nyaribo, is in UPA.
