Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga said the milestone reflects growing public confidence in the Affordable Housing Programme (AHP).

Data from the Affordable Housing Board shows that interest in the programme continues to outstrip supply, with more than 262,913 housing units currently under development in 111 constituencies across all 47 counties.

PS Hinga attributed the rising demand to the strategic location of projects within urban centres and the integration of essential infrastructure and public services.

“One million Kenyans committing to their own housing units is not a small feat. Kenyans have outgrown pessimism about the programme and are now saving towards their preferred units through the government-owned Boma Yangu portal. This level of uptake demonstrates trust in the process and belief that the projects will be delivered,” Hinga said.

He pointed to recent project completions as evidence of accelerated housing delivery under the programme.

“This government is setting a historic precedent in housing delivery. While it took 15 years to build about 5,000 units in Buruburu, the Mukuru Affordable Housing Project delivered over 1,000 units in its first year and handed over 4,500 completed homes in December,” he said.

“Beyond housing, the estate includes a shopping complex, a Level Four hospital, and an integrated education facility.”

According to the State Department for Housing, the programme targets different income categories, ranging from social housing for households earning up to Sh20,000 per month to affordable and market-rate units for higher-income earners.

The housing drive has also emerged as a major employment generator.

Government figures indicate that more than 428,000 Kenyans are directly employed full-time at construction sites, with an additional one million people engaged in supplying materials and services linked to the projects.

The Affordable Housing Programme is a flagship initiative under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, aimed at reducing the national housing deficit while promoting inclusive urban growth.

The Boma Yangu portal supports the programme by enabling low- and middle-income households to save toward homeownership.

It helps bridge the gap between housing demand and supply and is a key component of Kenya’s plan to deliver 200,000 affordable houses annually.

The portal connects individuals to the Affordable Housing Programme and the Housing Fund, facilitating access to mortgages and the National Tenant Purchase Scheme.

Allocation of homes is also managed through the platform, which is accessible via USSD, mobile web, and a standard web portal.
