The announcement was made on Wednesday by Defence Principal Secretary Patrick Mariru following a meeting with Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi and his delegation at Defence Headquarters in Nairobi.
Mr Mariru confirmed that the Ministry of Defence will supervise the project through the KDF, noting that construction works are scheduled to commence immediately.
The governor expressed confidence in the Kenya Defence Forces’ proven capacity to deliver high-quality projects on time, noting that their involvement inspires trust and underscores the national government’s commitment to the development of Wajir County.
“I’m pleased to report that the design phase is complete, and construction will commence immediately, with the project on track to be completed by June 1, 2026, in time for Madaraka Day celebrations,” the governor said.
He further emphasised that the county government looks forward to working closely with all stakeholders to ensure the stadium becomes a hub for sports, unity and youth empowerment, ultimately positioning Wajir as a rising centre for sporting excellence in the region.
“The proposed construction of the Wajir Stadium by the KDF is more than just an infrastructure project; it carries social, economic and developmental significance for the county,” Governor Abdullahi said.
“KDF has a strong track record in delivering public infrastructure efficiently, even in challenging environments. Their involvement reassures residents that the project is likely to meet quality standards and timelines,” he added.
Once completed, the facility is anticipated to reshape Wajir’s sports scene by creating new opportunities for young people, athletes and the local community. The stadium will be built to meet national standards and will include a full-sized football pitch, an eight-lane athletics track and modern changing rooms for players and officials.
Additional features will include VIP lounges, spectator sanitation facilities, equipment storage rooms and a secure perimeter wall. To accommodate large crowds during major events, the project will also provide ample parking space and a borehole to ensure a steady water supply.
With its 10,000-seat capacity, the stadium is expected to host regional and national sporting competitions, youth tournaments and community events.
The meeting was attended by senior officials from both the military and county governments, including Assistant Chief of Defence Forces for Personnel and Logistics Major General Edward Rugendo, and other senior officers from the Ministry of Defence and Wajir County.
