Directors, producers, and writers in Kenya’s film industry will now have access to affordable medical insurance, following a new partnership between the Female Filmmakers in Kenya Association (FEFKA) and BRITAM Insurance.

The initiative marks a major milestone for the country’s creative sector, as FEFKA becomes the first filmmakers’ association in Kenya to secure a dedicated health insurance scheme for its members.

The move is expected to enhance members’ well-being, reduce work disruptions, and minimize project delays caused by medical emergencies.

Under the partnership with Britam Connect, FEFKA members can now obtain medical insurance starting from as low as KSh 6,000 per year. The scheme is designed to be accessible for filmmakers at different stages of their careers.

The insurance provides three flexible packages, each offering varying levels of coverage to meet individual needs. Benefits include inpatient and outpatient medical cover, maternity benefits, dental and optical care, radiology and diagnostic services, ambulance services, last expense and funeral cover, as well as COVID-19 protection and other essential riders.

FEFKA President Sarah Owendi described the agreement as a landmark achievement for the creative industry. “This is a landmark step for the creative industry and a way to give our members peace of mind so that they can give us their best,” she said.

Owendi emphasized that the initiative reflects FEFKA’s commitment to the welfare, sustainability, and professional growth of women filmmakers in Kenya. She noted that access to healthcare is a critical pillar for building a resilient creative industry.

Through this partnership, FEFKA has set a precedent, demonstrating that creative associations can play a strategic role in advocating for their members and delivering tangible benefits.

The scheme is expected to provide members with timely, quality healthcare while allowing them to focus on their work without worrying about medical expenses.

The collaboration also highlights the potential of strategic partnerships between professional associations and insurance providers in fostering industry growth.

By addressing healthcare challenges, FEFKA aims to support the long-term sustainability of Kenya’s film sector and ensure that filmmakers have the resources needed to thrive professionally.
